Max’s Kansas City Project, the charitable arm of Max’s Kansas City, founded by Yvonne R. Sewall in 2001, is partnering with the Chelsea Hotel to produce and curate a very special gala event, exhibition and auction. The Max’s Project was established in memory of the late Mickey Ruskin, the creator of Max’s Kansas City and a staunch supporter of the arts. It embraces his philosophy of helping artists in need by providing emergency relief and resources for individuals in the arts in crisis. The organization also has a teen empowerment through the arts program FEARLESS YOUth, in development, featuring an interactive virtual club by teens for teens. The program supports teens in developing their unique identities through the creative arts with a focus on substance abuse and suicide prevention. The Max’s Project is supporting a whole new generation of artists in the same way Mickey did when he opened Max’s doors in the late 1960’s.
Max’s became an extension of Andy Warhol’s Factory, attracting innovators such as Warhol and his Superstars, (Viva, Ultra Violet, Edie, Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Rauschenberg, Betsey Johnson, Truman Capote, Frosty Myers, Roy Lichtenstein, Lauren Hutton, Jane Fonda, Robert Kennedy, Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, to name a few.
We are pleased to present Max’s impeccable collection of artworks, rock photography, rock memorabilia and originally designed jewelry, donated by many of Max’s influential artists, photographers and jewelers, plus there are works by some of our grant recipients. A sampling of these works include Lawrence Weiner, Larry Poons, Francine Tint, Larry Bell, Joseph Kosuth, Barbara Thomas, Ronnie Landfield, Dan Christensen, Bob Gruen, Danny Fields, Marcia Resnick, Roberta Bayley, Dustin Pittman, Anton Perich, Chris Stein, Paul Zone, Hank O’Neil, Elliott Landy, a banner from MTV Aerosmith icon signed by the band, Kate Pierson’s costume from the B52’s Orgasmic Tour, the Max’s banner from the tv series “Life On Mars” signed by the cast, a dress prototype designed by the Tiger Morse, the high priestess of fashion. We are soliciting donations of artworks from many more of our Max’s alumni.
